Need to refresh or build your maths skills? Join our online Maths Intensives sessions

Are you undertaking any units in Trimester 2 or beyond in which you’ll need to unpack mathematical or statistical concepts? If it has been a while since you last crunched some numbers, or you perhaps lack confidence when it comes to tackling maths subjects, we encourage you to join our upcoming online Maths Intensives sessions to build and enhance your maths skills.

Next month, we’re offering four one-hour maths sessions for students who would like to refresh and extend their maths in readiness for Trimester 2. All sessions are on Zoom and facilitated by our maths team and our student Maths Mentors, and will include an introduction to some of our latest maths resources.

Maths Mentor Jennifer TranHere, we asked Maths Mentor Jennifer Tran to give us some insight into how Maths Mentors and the Maths Intensives sessions could benefit you.

What are common problems or questions that you repeatedly encounter in students studying maths?
Some common problems we encounter in students undertaking maths subjects are the misunderstanding of basic maths concepts and lack of confidence. Students often struggle with fundamental mathematical concepts such as Numeracy, Algebra, Statistics and Geometry. This can often lead to reluctance and anxiety to engage with maths problems, and can hinder their progress and willingness to seek help.

For students who may lack confidence or practice in studying maths, what advice would you give them?
Always be comfortable asking for maths help! Don’t hesitate to seek help and ask questions when you encounter difficulties in maths. Maths is not easy and receiving support can lead to independent and active learning which is extremely beneficial in the long-term. This is why Maths Mentors are here! We are here to help and listen. There is no such thing as a stupid question.

Why would you encourage a student to attend a Maths Intensives session – what can they expect from a session?
There will be four maths sessions running from June 19–22 and they’re a great way for students to refresh and extend their maths to prepare for Trimester 2. You will be working with friendly Maths Mentors that will run through basic concepts that are fundamental to understanding maths. Students are also more than welcome to ask questions. We hope to see you there!

Ready to join our Maths Intensives sessions?

Pick and choose which session you would like to attend based on your interests and study requirements. Remember to register and to acquaint yourself with the content in each session via Deakin’s Foundation Maths Program. Each intensive session will be complemented by an online follow-up session from 2–3pm.

Maths Intensives session 1: Warming up with Numeracy
19 June, 12–1pm | Register now
This session will exercise your knowledge of positive and negative numbers, order of arithmetical operations, manipulating fractions, three-way conversion between fractions, decimals, percentages. It is recommended you register for the Foundation Maths Program and then familiarise yourself with the relevant Foundation Numeracy module and material prior to attending this Maths Intensives session.

Maths Intensives session 2: A brisk workout with Algebra
20 June, 12–1pm | Register now
This session will run you through substitution, expanding and factorising, solving linear equations, and worded problems. It is recommended you register for the Foundation Maths Program and then familiarise yourself with the relevant Foundation Algebra module and material prior to attending this Maths Intensives session.

Maths Intensives session 3: Improving your stamina with Statistics
21 June, 12–1pm | Register now
This session will extend your endurance with categorical and numerical data, the 3Ms (mean, mode, median), and the standard deviation. It is recommended you register for the Foundation Maths Program and then familiarise yourself with the relevant Foundation Statistics module and material prior to attending this Maths Intensives session.

Maths Intensives session 4: Getting in shape with Geometry
22 June, 12–1pm | Register now
This session will prepare you for the challenge to get the better of perimeter, area, surface area, volume, along with angles and similar triangles. It is recommended you register for the Foundation Maths Program and then familiarise yourself with the relevant Foundation Geometry module and material prior to attending this Maths Intensives session.
