Students in front of RESPECT letters

7 March 2023

We should all expect respect: learn more this ‘Respect at Uni Week’

‘Respect’ is a word we hear a lot and it’s one of Deakin’s core values. But what does it really mean and how do we demonstrate it every day? How do other people know that we respect them?

To respect someone is ‘to show regard or consideration for them’ and ‘to hold them in esteem or honour’. So, basically, it’s about being a good person and treating others well. Simple, right?

Well, not always. Relationships can be complicated, so that’s why we’re running ‘Respect at Uni Week’. We think it’s up to all of us to create a physical and online environment that’s nurturing, safe and supportive for everyone.

Be part of Respect at Uni Week

Our communities should be safe and free from violence. The recent National Student Safety Survey revealed universities must continue to improve their response to, and prevention of, sexual harassment and sexual assault.

That’s why Victorian universities are joining forces for Respect at Uni Week, which runs from Monday 13 to Friday 17 March. We’re promoting the importance of respect, equality and inclusion in our campuses, online spaces and communities.

We’re holding a series of on-campus and online events that will challenge, inform and inspire you. Some of the important areas we’ll cover include:

We also want to find out what respect means to you – head to our RESPECT pop-up on campus to share your thoughts and you’ll score a free tote bag of goodies!

Check out the full range of events and register to attend.

Other things you can do

It’s up to all of us to challenge views that condone violence, disrespect, power imbalances and inequity. Here’s how:

Where to get support

We’re always here to help you. Deakin has excellent free and confidential services, including:

There are also external support services, including 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732), which provides 24/7 information, counselling and support for people affected by family violence and sexual harm. In an emergency, always call Victoria Police on Triple Zero (000).
