New to Deakin and Australia? Settle in and make friends with our CONNECT program
Starting university isn’t always easy. If you’re also studying away from home, it can be even harder to get used to new routines, unfamiliar places and strange expressions or customs.
We’re so happy you’ve chosen Deakin and hope you’re starting to settle in. To help you adjust to life in Australia and your new course, we’re bringing our commencing international students together for some fun and relaxed social activities.
These free CONNECT events are organised for you, so all you need to do is come along and chat to other new students. You’ll get to know a bit about Australia, have a laugh and make new friends and study partners!
Here’s what’s on offer:
- Friday Friends: these casual one-hour catch-ups are held on campus every Friday for the first four weeks of trimester. Hosted by a student leader who knows the ins and outs of Deakin life, you’ll be able to get to know your campus, meet other students and ask any questions you have about uni or Australia.
Register for your campus. - Campus & beyond: discover a world outside of uni! These organised group activities will take you to some of Victoria’s most wonderful attractions and give you a taste of Aussie culture. Everything is arranged for you, so just enjoy the sights and sounds of your adopted home and make new friends along the way!

That’s not all!
Our CONNECT program gives you lots of other opportunities, including free health checks, come-and-try sport sessions and wellbeing workshops. If this is your first trimester as an international student at Deakin, we encourage you to try as many activities as possible – you’ll make new friends, practise your English skills, explore your campus, discover Deakin’s support services and learn about Australian culture.
We’d love to see you there – and best of luck for Trimester 1!
This program has been made possible by funding from the Victorian Government through the Study Melbourne International Education Resilience Fund.
