Group of students in common study area at Burwood

1 March 2023

What kind of Deakin student are you?

Being a Deakin student is about more than just getting a degree. We’re a community that celebrates diversity, and promotes a culture of safety, inclusion and respect. Everyone should feel protected and supported, and study in an environment that fosters academic and personal achievement.

While you’re here, we ask you to help us make these values a reality. Here’s how you can do it.

Study honestly

Our core behaviours are cooperation, honesty and integrity. The Student Code of Conduct and Rights and Responsibilities explain these expectations, which apply both to individual students and the University as a whole.

Academic integrity matters, which is why all new students complete a compulsory academic integrity module in DeakinSync to help you understand what’s expected from the start.
Actively contribute to our positive culture

At Deakin, you are part of a diverse community where everyone should feel safe, supported and respected.

There is no place for racism, discrimination, harassment or gender-based violence, and creating a respectful culture is something we all share. You will learn more through the Academic Integrity and Respect module in DeakinSync and you can join free active bystander training to build confidence in handling tricky situations. Email respect@deakin.edu.au for information on upcoming training.

Positive culture also includes treating academic and professional staff with respect as they are here to support your learning and success.
Celebrate diversity

Deakin is a place for discussion, debate and different perspectives.

We support freedom of speech and academic freedom, used in ways that respect the safety and dignity of others. Respectful disagreement is part of university life, but behaviour that causes harm or makes others feel unsafe is not.

To ensure everyone feels a strong sense of belonging, our Equity and Inclusion programs seek to drive gender equity, respectful behaviours, LGBTIQ+ inclusion, cultural diversity, disability access and inclusion, and student access and participation.
Safety online and on campus
Diversity icon
Looking after yourself and each other matters. Download the SafeZone app before coming to campus so you can quickly contact Deakin Security for emergencies or support.

Online spaces are part of university life too, so be aware of cyberbullying, scams and online abuse, and reach out for help if you need it.
Look after yourself and each other
Empathy icon
Deakin is committed to preventing and addressing gender-based violence.

Safer Community offers confidential support and reporting options for sexual harm, family violence or concerning behaviour, no matter when or where it happened.

Contact Safer Community to report or make a disclosure of gender-based violence including sexual harm and family violence (no matter when or where it happened); to report problem behaviour; or to access support. All assistance is confidential (unless required by law).
Speak up
Activism icon
If you see or experience behaviour that doesn’t align with Deakin’s values, speak up if it’s safe to do so.

Early action can make a real difference. For urgent situations, contact Deakin Security or call Triple Zero (000).

You can also report concerning behaviour to the Student Conduct Team or seek advice from harassment and discrimination contact officers.
