Deakin students come from all walks of life and from all around the world. This diversity is one of our greatest strengths and something to celebrate. We want our entire community to feel like they belong, and to value and embrace cultural differences and perspectives.
This March, we’re shining a spotlight on cultural diversity as we observe Harmony Week (20−26 March), the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (Tuesday 21 March) and Cultural Diversity Week (11–21 March) – and we can’t wait to celebrate the spirit of multiculturalism with you at our very own Fusion Festival!
Join us for Fusion Festival on your campus
Fusion Festival is our celebration of cultural diversity at Deakin. From Monday 20 to Thursday 23 March, we’ll be hosting a range of events across the Burwood, Waterfront, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool campuses to recognise and honour the impressive mix of cultural backgrounds in our University community.
What’s happening throughout the week:
Welcome to Country
Attend a Smoking Ceremony delivered by an Indigenous elder. Afterwards, enjoy some free ice-cream showcasing traditional Indigenous ingredients, developed in partnership by Worn Gundidj Bush Foods and Timboon Fine Ice Cream (Waurn Ponds, Warrnambool and Waterfront), or watch a cooking demonstration from the team at Mullum-Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place (Burwood).
Fusion Festival Street Party
Enjoy delicious food from all around the globe; multicultural music, including incredible Japanese drumming; student performances; a collaborative art project; Indigenous basket-weaving, henna body art and more!
A blast of colour!
Join our vibrant ColourMOVE event, inspired by the traditional celebration of Holi. Walk, jog or run – and have a blast!
We want you!
Share your cultural influences by performing on stage at Fusion Festival! We’re looking for musical and dance acts, and you can perfom as an individual or in a group. To apply, just complete our Expression of Interest form – you’ll also need to upload a short sample performance video. Applications close on Friday 10 March, so hurry!
To kick off Fusion Festival, we’ll also be debuting our student-voted global playlist at each campus. Start thinking about your favourite tune and look out for the call for requests next week.
