Some exciting changes and improvements to your uni experience

The last two years of online learning have brought challenges and change to all of us at Deakin. We’re excited to move forward and use what we’ve learnt during this period to bring you an even better study experience.

Under the DeakinDesign program, we consulted with more than 890 staff and students to explore what the best possible university environment could look like. The answer? Combining digital, physical and human connections to create amazing learning opportunities that will set you up for success at uni and in the wider world.

We focused on the following key areas:

Here’s how you’ll benefit in Trimester 3, 2022 and into 2023.

Learning activities

We want ‘integrated learning’ to mean authentic and meaningful study. Clearly defined learning activities will allow you to seamlessly combine in-person tasks (on campus, in the community, in the workplace) with online experiences (at home, in virtual spaces or anywhere in the world). These will be tailored to your discipline and study mode.

You’ll learn from inspiring teaching teams alongside your peers in an interactive and collaborative environment. Whether you’re online or on campus, you’ll study flexibly via our premium digital and physical learning environments, supported by our inclusive and accessible services. All of this will be underpinned by our DeakinDesign principles and practices.

Implementation date: For Semester 1/Trimester 1, 2023.

End-of-unit assessment

We want assessment terminology to be simple, clear and accessible. During each end-of-unit assessment period (previously known as the exam period), the tasks you’re required to complete will be designed to be more authentic and allow you to implement feedback provided in previous assessment tasks.

Implementation date: For Semester 1/Trimester 1, 2023.

Cloud Campus to online

The way our community chooses to study continues to change, and the distinction between online and on-campus courses is now blurred.

Students are enrolling in units that give them a university experience that suits their learning needs, lifestyle and course requirements. In T2, 48% of campus-based students enrolled in units online, while 28% of Cloud Campus students studied at least one or more units on campus.

That’s why we’re changing the term ‘Cloud Campus’ to ‘online learners’ – we think this better reflects the flexibility you want in your mode of study, as well as the inclusivity that’s at the heart of Deakin.

Implementation date: Late October 2022.

This is just the beginning …

We’ll continue working with the Deakin community to implement these changes, so stay tuned for more updates and ongoing DeakinDesign initiatives.
