Three students working at Deakin Downtown

3 August 2022

Shape your legal career: apply to take part in the 2022–23 Vis Moot

Are you looking for a challenge? By getting involved in mooting – the closest experience of working in a courtroom you can have at university – you’ll develop skills in advocacy, problem-solving, legal research, persuasion, collaboration and presentation, while deep-diving into a particular area of law.

You’ll also build a valuable network of practitioners and have the chance to go head-to-head against students from across the globe in a simulated courtroom environment.

The Deakin Law School (DLS) is home to some of the most talented moot court competitors in the world. We have a particularly rich history in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (Vis Moot), an international moot court competition held annually in Vienna before Easter. A sister moot, the Willem C. Vis (East) Moot, is held in Hong Kong just before the rounds in Vienna every year.

How does it work?

In a moot, law students take on the role of legal counsel and argue hypothetical cases before an academic, another student or a practitioner acting as a judge. You’ll undertake legal research and drafting to prepare memoranda and support your oral arguments.

If you’re selected in our Vis Moot team of four to six students, you’ll be enrolled in either of the following units (worth one credit point):

The Vis Moot team will start to prepare after Trimester 2 exams and will work together at our Burwood or Deakin Downtown campuses until Easter 2023. In-person requirements typically include induction, team meetings, advocacy workshops, practice and attendance at the moot. The workload is estimated to be approximately 300 hours, so it’s a big commitment!

DLS provides coaching and mentoring to help you maximise this opportunity, as well as scholarships that may cover a proportion of your costs.

I’m interested – what happens now?

Make sure you join us for an online information session, where we’ll give you more details about the Vis Moot process and answer all your questions.

When: Tuesday 9 August, 5.30–6pm
Join meeting (Meeting ID: 813 0372 4015 Password: 77650403).

Note: if you’re interested in learning more about international commercial arbitration mooting, join us from 4.30pm for a workshop covering this area.

Can’t make the session? Find out more and apply for the Vis Moot using the online form by 5pm, Sunday 28 August. You’ll need to supply a cover letter, your CV and your academic transcript as part of your application.

The Vis Moot began in 1993 and DLS is one of only five universities from more than 360 global institutions to have competed in each year. The Deakin team has twice earned the title of World Champion – in 1998–99 and 2013–14 – so don’t miss the chance to make your own piece of history!
