Can you finish the library scavenger hunt?

If you missed out on the library’s online sessions during Orientation Week, don’t worry! Not only can you watch the session recordings on UniStart, but you can also participate in the session activity – the library website scavenger hunt – any time through 29 July.

The best way to make sure you can find all five items in the scavenger hunt is by knowing some key information about the library website, which we covered in the first part of our online session. Here’s a quick overview.

Library search

The search bar is where you can explore our collection. If you already know the name of the book you’re looking for, the easiest way to find it is to type in the title and click the magnifying glass. If you’re trying to find resources on a topic more broadly, type in your keywords (using double quote marks to keep multiple words together) and click the magnifying glass.

For example, if you search for Sand Talk, the search results will show you all the places you can pick up a copy of this book in our collection. However, if you want to find other resources on the topic of Indigenous thinking, try typing “Indigenous thinking” in the search bar to explore everything in our collection related to that topic. If you don’t use double quotes, it will search for every resource that contains either the word ‘Indigenous’ or the word ‘thinking’ so your results may not be as relevant.

This will help you with clues #1 and #2 of the scavenger hunt.

Liaison Librarians

Each faculty has dedicated librarians who specialise in your area of study. They can help you find particular resources for your research, offer personalised guidance and set up consultations with you. You can find your Liaison Librarian or get in touch with the library more generally by visiting our Contact us page.

This will help you with clue #3 of the scavenger hunt.

Resource Guides

A great place to get started with research is your recommended Library Resource Guides. You can find tips, links and helpful resources, all compiled by Liaison Librarians that specialise in your area of study.

This will help you with clue #4 of the scavenger hunt.

Skills for study page

On Skills for study page, you can find a range of content to help you research and enhance your digital literacy skills. This is a great place to explore as a new student, as it will have a lot of answers and tips about common queries for new students.

This will help you with clue #5 of the scavenger hunt.

Start hunting

The information above should be enough to get you started! The first clue is this:

Using Library Search, find the e-book titled ‘Ned Skelly: the library skeleton’. Note down the author of this book.

Hidden within that collection item, you’ll find the clue for the next collection item. After that, you’ll be hunting for webpages rather than resources, so keep your eye out for this pink ribbon icon:

Click on the icon, and it will give you the next clue. Good luck!
