Join us for Tree Planting Day at Waurn Ponds

Tree Planting Day is back this July! Deakin’s grounds team are once again inviting students and staff to help them plant 4500 indigenous trees, shrubs, and grasses around the Waurn Ponds Campus.

Our partner, Barwon Water, has kindly donated approximately 2000 plants, purchased from the Geelong Community nursery run by GenU, an organisation providing training and employment pathways for people with a disability.

Help us make a difference in preserving our environment as you get back to nature – register now to join us on the day! Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

What Deakin is doing to support biodiversity

Sustainability is a core focus at Deakin. At this year’s Tree Planting Day, we are also excited to launch Deakin’s first Biodiversity Strategy. This foundational document that sets the stage for important enhancements to our natural campus environments.

Global biodiversity loss is one of the biggest threats to the planet’s survival. Deakin’s Biodiversity Strategy is designed to combat this challenge within the environments that we manage, by ensuring we protect, enhance, and restore our campuses’ unique flora and fauna values, and inspire people to connect with nature. The strategy also enables many important opportunities for applied teaching and research, using our campuses as Living Laboratories.

Importantly, at the heart of our focus is a commitment to embrace the values of the Traditional Custodians. This includes finding ways to ‘walk softly’ during our time on Country.

You might notice a range of biodiversity work as we bring the strategy to life. This includes revegetation around waterways and other areas, improvements to habitats that attract and support certain wildlife, landscaping around buildings, guided tours and trails, and opportunities for on-the-ground student projects.

The Tree Planting Day at Waurn Ponds also plays a significant role in enhancing biodiversity. This year your planting efforts will form part of a green corridor connecting the ponds to surrounding bush and farmland. The event is a fantastic opportunity to get outside, get active and connect with like-minded staff and students, and we hope to see you there. Register now
