Deakin’s Melbourne Vixens stars all set to play in the Super Netball Grand Final

Deakin elite-athlete students and Melbourne Vixens stars Kate Moloney, Kate Eddy, Liz Watson and Jo Weston (pictured) will play in the 2022 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final this weekend after defeating the Giants in a thrilling one-goal win on Saturday.

The Vixens were behind by nine goals at three quarter-time before overthrowing the Giants 17–7 in the final term in a surprise comeback. Having ascended from wooden spooners last season to minor premiers, the Vixens will now take on the West Coast Fever in Perth this Sunday.

Co-captain Liz Watson (Bachelor of Education – Primary) spoke of the team’s excitement in making the Grand Final, particularly in light of the Vixens’ 71–62 semi-final loss to Fever last week.

‘That was absolutely unbelievable. To see that fight and the hunger in the end, we knew we were going to go all the way and I’m so excited about that,’ she told the ABC.

‘We worked so hard all season which got us a double chance, which we obviously needed from last week’s performance.’

Watson, co-captain Kate Moloney (Master of Business – Sport Management) and Jo Weston (Master of Communication) were also recently named in the 12-strong Australian Diamonds team for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Best of luck to the Melbourne Vixens! Congratulations on an incredible season thus far. #SSN2022 #finalsfearless
