This NAIDOC Week, immerse yourself in the world’s oldest continuing culture

Sunday 3 to Sunday 10 July is NAIDOC (‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’) Week, when we celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

There’s a range of incredible events planned – both at Deakin and in the wider community – so pop the following in your diary to ensure you don’t miss out.

Off Country follows the lives of seven Indigenous students as they leave home to spend a year at one of the most elite boarding schools in the country, Geelong Grammar.

Wrestling with their conflicting identities as students moving between boarding life and home life, Off Country is a complex portrait of what it’s like to be an Indigenous child in Australia today.

Don’t miss this free exhibition of historical and contemporary artworks by a diverse group of First Nations artists. These woven, bark and print mediums celebrate Indigenous knowledge and community through continuing cultural and creative practices.

Learn the basics of basket-weaving in a relaxed workshop to be held at our Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool campuses. At the Waurn Ponds event, you’ll also have the chance to hear from First Nations academics on the Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! theme, allyship and the importance of NAIDOC Week.
