Have you got a USI? Most students need one to stay enrolled and graduate

Do you know if you have a Unique Student Identifier (USI)? This is your lifelong individual education number with the Australian Government, and it’s important for several reasons.

Depending on the type of student you are, you may need a USI to:

You’ll also need it for any other tertiary study you do in the future.

Once you have a USI, you must also provide it to Deakin. Here’s all you need to know.

Do I need a USI?

Most current students need a USI, including:

If you commenced at Deakin in 2022, you should already have been prompted to give us your USI when you enrolled. If you’ve studied at TAFE in the last few years, you may already have a USI. Check if you have one as you don’t need to apply again (although you’ll still need to give it to Deakin). You also don’t need a USI if you’re an international student based overseas.

How do I get a USI?

It’s simple to get your USI – just create one online at the Australian Government’s Get a USI portal. It only takes about five minutes and you just need one form of ID.

Make sure your name and date of birth match those on your Deakin enrolment.

How do I provide my USI to Deakin?

Once you have your USI, follow these quick steps to provide it to Deakin:

If your verification is successful, you can log out – you’re done!

If verification is unsuccessful, please double-check that what you’ve entered exactly matches your details on the USI government portal and try again. If you still can’t verify your USI on StudentConnect, please contact Student Central.

What happens if I don’t get a USI?

If you’re required to have a USI, we encourage you to provide it to us as soon as possible. If you don’t provide us with your USI by Friday 16 December 2022:

Got a question? Check out our USI webpage for more info or contact Student Central.
