Enjoy a Garden-to-Plate Masterclass and explore our community garden!

Eating is one of life’s pleasures, and nothing tastes better than an amazing and healthy meal you’ve made yourself!

You may have heard about garden-to-plate, which is all about using fresh, seasonal produce that minimises waste and creates simple meals that are nutritious, budget-friendly and – most importantly – delicious!

If that’s making your tastebuds tingle, don’t miss our upcoming event at the Deakin Community Garden. We’re holding a Garden-to-Plate Masterclass, where we’ll use some ingredients from the garden and create a salad for you and other students to enjoy.

The class will be led by Deakin alumna Harriet Lausberg, who graduated with a Bachelor of Nutrition Science and Cert IV in Fitness in 2020 and now works at Deakin as Hospitality Project Officer, including collaborating on the Corner Café’s vibrant new nutrition- and sports science-based menu.

What’s on the menu?

Harriet will be making Mediterranean chickpea salad with fresh herb dressing and falafels. Yum! She’ll also explain the nutritional value of the ingredients and provide info on how to make meal preparation easier and reduce food waste.

Once the food is ready, you’ll be able to chat to other students as you sit down to share the meal (*this part is very important!*). There will also be a guided tour of the garden, so you’ll learn what’s in season and be able to grab some of the produce to take home!

When: Monday 28 March, 12.30–1.30pm
Where: Deakin Community Garden – located at Burwood Highway Entrance 2. The garden is next to Building BC (Corporate Centre) and in between Buildings R and F.
