Guleid Abdullahi, 2022 DUSA Presidenr

7 March 2022

Meet Guleid, your 2022 DUSA President

Welcome Guleid Abdullahi, your new Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) President!

Guleid and the DUSA Student Council are your elected student representatives who are actively involved with the University on all matters relating to students. They are here to help create a welcoming and enjoyable culture for all students at Deakin.

Whether you realise it or not, your Student Council regularly advocates on your behalf to improve your uni experience. They have successfully lobbied for important changes to formal policies (such as changing the census, late withdrawal and international student withdrawal dates) and other amenities related to making your day-to-day life as a student easier (such as lobbying for parking permit refunds).

Here, Guleid tells us a little about himself and his hopes for 2022 as your DUSA Student Council President.

Hi besties! My name is Guleid Abdullahi, I’m an international student from Kenya, a third-year Double Bachelor student studying Information Technology and Information Systems, and I am your 2022 President.

My role involves being the primary spokesperson of DUSA. This includes liaising directly with senior university staff and being responsible for the governance of DUSA.

I started university a week late, so I missed all of the JAFFY first-year stuff. But, I was able to make it just in time for the Club Market Day. I saw the dragon flag thingy and I was like, ‘hold up, that dragon is from League of Legends’.

On that day, I realised I found my first home in my university. I know it’s corny but that was my first introduction to DUSA: an Esports club. Cute server tag here <3

I then eventually became the President of that eSports club. Leading the Deakin Esports Student Association (DESA) helped me learn even more about DUSA!

In 2019, I decided to run for the role of Diversity Officer at DUSA. I won – yay! I then later decided to take on more responsibility and won further opportunities to represent students.

I was ready for a great year in 2020 but COVID decided to pull an encore. It put a lot of students, including myself, into limbo and disarray.

DUSA did not falter, we advocated for our students throughout COVID disruptions. We got students two-week extensions on assignments, put more money into the financial support scheme to support our students in financial need, and even created jobs with COVIDSafe Ambassadors and gave them to students who needed it most.

We were able to achieve so much. Even though I have been in DUSA for more than two years, my love for this union continues to grow even more.

I wanted to take a bigger part to help this growth reach new levels. I can’t wait to see what I can do this year for our students.

Got a question? You can give me a cheeky DM on Facebook, Instagram or even on Discord! ;D

You can also contact your student representatives through [email protected].
