Congratulations on your Olympic gold, Jakara! Tune in to follow upcoming events in Beijing
As we bask in Victoria’s balmy summer conditions, we hope you’re enjoying chilling out as you catch all the action from Deakin’s elite-athlete students at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing!
Over the weekend, we couldn’t be prouder of Jakara Anthony who took out gold in her women’s moguls final, we cheered on Dean Hewitt for keeping his cool in trying conditions during his curling mixed doubles on Sunday, and we eagerly await the upcoming events for Belle Brockhoff and Bree Walker in the next few days! Remember to stayed tuned to Seven’s official televised coverage of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics for all the latest results.
Congratulations on winning Olympic gold, Jakara!
Currently a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science student at Deakin, Jakara managed to score Australia’s first gold medal in Beijing in her Women’s Moguls event on Sunday after dominating the qualification trials. Jakara’s win also marks Australia’s sixth gold medal in Winter Olympics history.
Giving us insight into her winning mindset during the fiercely competitive finals, Jakara kept her sights firmly on the bigger goal.
‘I really just tried to stay focused on what I needed to do,’ said Jakara following her historic win. ‘That was all I could control in the moment.’
Currently third in the women’s World Cup rankings (and first in the overall mogul World Cup standings), Jakara has been steadily building her reputation as one of the best female mogul skiers in the world. She previously competed at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics at just 19 years of age, making the Super Final in the Freestyle Mogul Skiing event and finishing fourth overall – the highest result ever for an Australian in the history of Mogul Skiing at the Winter Olympics at the time.
Congratulations on your first Olympic gold medal, Jakara!
Good luck this week, Belle!
We’re excited to see Belle kick off her bid for a medal in Beijing on Wednesday! A current Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws student at Deakin and experienced Olympian, Belle has previously competed in the 2018 PyeongChang and 2014 Sochi Winter Games.
Last year, Belle was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Snow Australia Awards in May following an amazing comeback season in which she was the 2021 Mixed Team Snowboard Cross World Champion. She was also named as a finalist for the prestigious Athlete of the Year Award, with a nomination in this category alone considered to be an exclusive industry honour.
In addition to her competitive schedule, Belle has also shared her story to support several campaigns aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of other young people which earned her the 2020 Community Spirit Award in the 2020 Deakin Sport Awards. We wish you all the very best this week, Belle!
Catch Belle’s first snowboard cross qualifying event at 2pm on Wednesday 9 February via Seven’s coverage of the Winter Games.
Well done, Dean!
We’ve been cheering on alumnus Dean Hewitt during his Olympic debut, which has so far played out with a mix of drama and victory! Dean, who studied both a Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science and Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology at Deakin, scored Australia’s first wins in an Olympic curling event in the mixed doubles against both Canada and Switzerland over the weekend.
While Dean and curling partner Tahli Gill did not make the next round, their wins followed a nerve-wracking last-minute reversal of their event withdrawals following a contested positive COVID-19 test for Tahli, leading to the pair making a hurried return to the competition after packing their bags to return home.
‘It was just crazy, mayhem, getting the uniforms on. The excitement in the (hotel) room was unbelievable. It was so exciting to be able to get back out on the ice and play these last two games,’ said Dean.
Well done on your first Olympics, Dean!
Catch the mixed doubles semi-final event at 11.05pm tonight, Monday 7 February via Seven’s coverage of the Winter Games.
Stay tuned for Bree Walker in bobsleigh next week
Formerly a Bachelor of Health and Physical Education student at Deakin, we’re keeping our eye on alumna Bree Walker in her bid to bring home a medal for Australia!
Currently ranked fifth in the world in her sport, Bree will make her Olympic debut in Beijing when she competes in the women’s monobob and two-woman bobsleigh events next week.
Since 2016, Bree has quickly established herself in her discipline, becoming the first Australian to win a World Cup gold medal in the sport and dominating the monobob circuit with seven gold medals to her name. Good luck for your upcoming event, Bree!
Catch Bree’s first bobsleigh heat at 12.30pm on Sunday 13 February via Seven’s coverage of the Winter Games.
