Three women walking together at Geelong Waterfront

4 October 2021

Get MOVEing and stay sharp for exams with DeakinACTIVE this month!

Is the balmy weather putting a spring in your step? With daylight savings now granting us more sunlight, October is the perfect time to ramp up your MOVES.

October is also National Mental Health Month, which is why we want to encourage you to get moving as part of a routine to support your overall health. Whether it’s a full heart-pumping jog or skipping session, a simple walk around the block, or even some basic isometric or bodyweight exercises in your living room, finding ways to move every day can help us reduce feelings of stress, stay mentally sharp and achieve optimal wellbeing.

If you’re looking for some inspiration to get started, join our monthly challenge or a fitness class to stay strong, healthy and keep your concentration firing for T2/S2 exams!

Do Deakin proud in the national MOVE IT Challenge!

This month we’re participating in the UniMoves MOVE IT Challenge where we’ll take on five other universities (University of Central Queensland, Southern Cross University, Melbourne University, Federation University and Charles Sturt University).

As part of this friendly competition, we’re challenging you to reach at least 3500 MOVEs of tracked activity per week for four weeks. All participants who reach that target will go into the weekly draw to win one of three $50 Rebel vouchers!

The university with the highest average number of MOVERs reaching the 3500 target for the entire month will also receive a $100 donation to a charity of their choice! Let’s go, Team Deakin – it’s time to come together and take out the winning cup!

Keen to take part? Each week is treated as a new challenge – so you’ll need to join all four challenges via the DeakinMOVES app:

All are welcome too, so grab your mates and get them involved – we’ll not only score more MOVES for Team Deakin but you’ll be finding fun new ways to stay fit and active with your friends!

Stay fit from home

While metro Melbourne remains in lockdown, DeakinACTIVE is continuing to run our free online fitness, health and wellbeing classes until the end of October so you can keep your body and mind in motion at home. Please feel free to jump into a class whenever the mood strikes! Classes are held via Zoom or the DeakinMOVES app

To join one of the Zoom sessions, click the session link at the correct time and enter the password ‘deakin’. If you’re joining a DeakinMOVES livestreamed session, make sure you enter the Burwood facility to access these online classes via the DeakinACTIVE app.

Based in Geelong?

We’ve got a special October ‘Off-Peak’ promotion for the Waurn Ponds DeakinACTIVE fitness centre, where you can score one months’ access to the gym (from the date you sign up) for just $20 – that’s a discount of more than 50% which results in you gaining access to our world-class facilities for less than 65 cents per day!

Sounds great – so what’s included? The Off-Peak promotion allows you access the DeakinACTIVE Waurn Ponds facilities between the hours of 9am–4pm, Monday to Friday. This offer also includes access to outdoor lunch-time group fitness classes on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays (see below), as well as a free health consultation (subject to availability at different times). Enjoy having the gym to yourself during our off-peak times and beat the rush on all of our state-of-the-art Technogym equipment!

You can join up online or in person at DeakinACTIVE Waurn Ponds. Remember you must book your workouts and lunchtime group fitness classes via the DeakinMOVES app to manage capacity limits. The Off-Peak Promotion is available to purchase between 1–15 October and is available to new members only. See the DeakinACTIVE website for full terms and conditions and COVID-19 updates

Join an outdoor group fitness class!

Outdoor group fitness classes are back at Waurn Ponds from Monday 4 October! Come and work out with a friend or mingle among our small group fitness classes to put the fun back into your fitness. Our class schedule offers a variety of lunch-time and afternoon classes for your convenience.

Members must book in for classes on the DeakinMOVES app (maximum of 10 participants per class). All classes will be held outdoors at the Union Green space outside the Waurn Ponds gym. And don’t fret if the weather doesn’t look like it’ll hold out – we’ll contact members of any affected classes to let you if we have to cancel.

Want some more personalised attention?

Are you wanting to get back into a fitness routine but not sure where to start? One-to-one, two-to-one, and small group personal training sessions are available to help you. Our trainers will work with you to build a personalised program around your capabilities and fitness levels – you’ll have your very own coach to help you reach your health and fitness goals. You could book in with a friend and share the cost! See the DeakinACTIVE website for more information.
