Curious about organ donation? Educate yourself this Donate Life Week

Have you ever considered organ donation? While it’s no doubt a confronting subject, it’s something that can transform people’s lives.

According to the Organ and Tissue Authority, there’s currently about 1650 people waitlisted for a transplant, and another 12,000 who are on dialysis and may benefit from a kidney transplant.

With a decrease in donation and transplantation activity during 2020 due to COVID-19, it’s never been more important to consider registering as an organ and tissue donor. Currently, there are around 13 million Australians aged 16+ who are eligible to register as a donor – but haven’t.

Donate Life Week runs from Sunday 25 July to Sunday 1 August. It aims to inspire all Australians to make a real difference to the lives of others by registering to be an organ and tissue donor, and telling their family they want to be a donor.

It doesn’t matter how old you are, your medical history, your lifestyle, what country you’re from or how healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor.

All major religions support organ donation, and donors are needed from all communities and cultures.

Find out more about organ and tissue donation, including how to register, how it works, and common myths and misconceptions.
