HDR students: need software for your research or study?

Deakin licenses over 400 different software applications for use by students on our personal and Deakin computers. Despite that, you might still have found it difficult in the past to find the software you needed.

From Tuesday 20 July 2021, a new Software Catalogue will make it easier for HDR students to search and access the full range of available software for your research or study. 

Accessed via the IT Help Portal, the Software Catalogue provides a central catalogue of all software available for use on Deakin-managed computers from across all our various software sources. You’ll be able to search for software, request access, renew licensing, request installation and request purchase of new software if needed.

Software for unmanaged or personal computers will still be available via the Software Library and Apps and Desktops Anywhere.

How do I use it?

Use the new Software Catalogue to search for and request access to software already licensed for use at Deakin. If a licence is available and your request is approved, you’ll receive installation instructions via email. You can check on the status of your software requests at any time via the IT Help Portal (log in to see your requests under My Tickets).

Can’t find what you’re looking for?

We encourage you to use the existing licensed software wherever possible, but if the software you need isn’t available you can submit a request for new software through the Software Catalogue. Before submitting a request, contact your area IT Manager for assistance. If your request has a deadline, please let us know. All requests for new software must go through an extensive approval and assessment process.

Be aware that Deakin policy defines software as a restricted item, and that all software purchases should be made centrally through the Software Catalogue. No software or licences should be purchased independently or on credit card.

When is it happening?

The new Software Catalogue will be available via the IT Help Portal from 20 July 2021. To access the catalogue:

  1. Log in to the IT Help Portal and select the ‘Request Something’ tile.
  2. From ‘Catalogs’ select ‘IT Help’.
  3. Under ‘Categories’ select ‘Software’.
