What is the New Colombo Plan scholarship?
The New Colombo Plan is an Australian Government initiative which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region by supporting Australian undergraduates to live, study and intern in the region*. Each scholarship is worth up to $70,000 and provides you with endless educational, professional and personal development opportunities across multiple Indo-Pacific countries. Since 2017, 32 Deakin students have been awarded a scholarship – in 2022, this could be you!

What do Deakin students have to say about the scholarship?
Hafi Khan, an optometry Honours student at Deakin, received the scholarship to study and work in Hong Kong in 2018. In this YouTube interview, Hafi said not only was living abroad amazing but his time at Hong Kong’s Polytechnic University allowed him to expand the scope of his research into a ‘multi-site, multi-population eye study’ with important implications.
‘[This work] hasn’t been done before… we hope to make a medical breakthrough with the way we treat different eye conditions,’ he said.
Jasmine Daneshvar, who is completing a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Commerce at Deakin, was recently awarded the scholarship for 2021. Jasmine will soon head to Malaysia to study at Taylor’s University and undertake internships with both the Securities Commission Malaysia and international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills. The former Sacred Heart College student said the scholarship was an amazing opportunity to challenge herself in a foreign environment and gain legal knowledge and experience from an international perspective.
