Victoria will enter a statewide lockdown from tonight: what this means for you
Following today’s announcement by the Acting Victorian Premier, from 11.59pm, Thursday 27 May until 11.59pm, Thursday 3 June, Victoria will be subject to circuit-breaker restrictions to manage the latest COVID-19 outbreak.
As of 11:59pm tonight, our campuses and learning centres are closed to students and staff, excluding essential staff and those students living on campus. Read more about the latest lockdown restrictions.
If you’re worried that you may have been at an exposure site, you must visit the Victorian Government exposure site listing and follow the instructions carefully.

What you need to know about lockdown
During this time, you must follow the below rules:
- There are only five reasons you can leave your home:
- shopping for the things you need
- care and caregiving
- exercise – for two hours per day
- if you’re an essential worker
- to get the COVID-19 vaccination if you’re eligible.
- Exercise and shopping are limited to no more than five kilometres from your home (unless there are no shops within that distance).
- Face masks are to be worn at all times – both indoors and outdoors – except if at home or if an exemption applies.
- Public and private gatherings are not permitted.
- Higher education is remote learning only.
What this means for your learning and other uni activities
Learning
Scheduled on-campus teaching, events and other activities will be paused during the lockdown period. Online learning will continue as planned. If you have any scheduled on-campus learning activities, please check your unit sites for the most up-to-date information.
As we’re heading into the Trimester 1 study period, which runs from Monday 31 May to Friday 4 June, you can only access library services online.
Clinical placements, other placements and work integrated learning
Approved student health and medical placements, including beyond the five kilometre limit, will continue where partner institutions remain open. These will be managed directly by the schools.
Work integrated learning will shift to online or be postponed. If you’re affected, you’ll be directly contacted.
T1 exams
All Trimester 1 exams will continue as planned.
T2 timetable update
Current timelines and standard processes will continue as planned. Please check the STAR website for the most up-to-date information.

Rest assured, help is still available during this time. You can continue to access a range of Deakin support services online:
- Student Central: If you have a question about your enrolment or course, finances or other issue, contact Student Central. Student Central Hubs will be closed during the lockdown.
- Deakin Library: Contact the Library via Library Chat, email or phone. All campus libraries will be temporarily closed.
- Study Support: Access a range of academic and study support online, including help from Language and Learning Advisers, Writing and Maths Mentors, and Smarthinking.
- Learning Centres: Are closed.
- IT Help: For any issues with CloudDeakin tools and other technologies, access IT Help online or over the phone, Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm, and weekends, 11am–5pm.
- Deakin Medical Centres: Remain open for free and confidential face-to-face or telehealth consultations. By appointment only – book online or by phone. You must wear a face mask at all times.
- Counselling and Psychological Support (CAPS): Students located in Australia can talk to one of our highly skilled social workers and psychologists. Telehealth appointments only – book online or by phone.
- Safer Community: If you feel unsafe or need to report sexual harm or family violence, contact the Safer Community team online, by phone or by email.
- Disability Resource Centre (DRC): The DRC is available Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm via phone or email.
- Multifaith Chaplains: Contact your preferred Multifaith Chaplain via phone or email for a confidential chat.
- Financial assistance: If you’re in financial difficulty, visit our Financial Assistance website for more information and to contact a Financial Assistance Officer for personalised support. Financial support during COVID-19 is also available from the Victorian Government.
