Library Basics Part 6: Make sure you reference correctly
You probably know by now that proper referencing is important – but do you know why?
When done right, referencing:
- gives credit to others when you use their work
- allows your readers to follow your references and read up more on the topic
- shows the person who is marking your assignment how widely you have read
- is an indication of the quality of your sources.
To make sure you’re referencing correctly, first check your unit guide for the preferred referencing style for your unit. Once you have this, look at Deakin’s online reference guide for examples on how to reference different types of sources (e.g. book chapters, journal articles, government reports found on websites, etc.)
Study Support also offers a program called UniStart that has different modules on getting started, digital tools and study success. This includes a great session on referencing.
You might also enjoy this introductory presentation on the importance of referencing.
