Everyone belongs at Deakin: celebrate Harmony Day with our global playlist!
This week is Harmony Week, which culminates on Sunday 21 March with Harmony Day. Our diversity is such an important part of Deakin’s identity and culture, and we fully embrace and support this year’s theme of ‘Everyone belongs’.
We recently asked you to help us create a global Spotify playlist that showcases the range of cultures, influences and backgrounds that make up our Deakin community. And did you deliver!
So here’s the playlist: download it for your next study session, party or anything in between. You might also hear it in a cafe or at Student Central when you’re on campus. Singing along is encouraged!
And congratulations to Panisa Nitivathananont, who won the $100 Visa gift card!
What belonging means to you
We’ve also been out and about this week at the various campus Beats and Eats events, chatting to students about how they define ‘belonging’, and what it feels like to be part of a big and diverse community like Deakin.
Here’s a few insights:
Vish – second-year international student:
‘The general vibe that I get from the place, there is a sense of respect. The fact that I get to easily participate in things. The fact I have a lot of opportunities. If something were to go wrong, there are support services in place to keep me safe. Constant advocacy for different groups that make the world a more colourful place.’
Alec – Honours student in Psychology:
‘There’s such a diverse and accepting culture at Deakin. And it’s a pleasure every time I come onto campus.’
Candice, Steph, Nam and Samira – second-year nursing students:
‘It’s been very easy to make friends with people we can relate to. People are friendly, including teachers who are down to earth. Coming into campus is super fun.’
Jet:
‘I love the supportive and welcoming environment from all staff and students on the campus. I’m looking forward to completing the rest of my degree here.’
Tully – Deakin Res:
‘While we are all from different places and have different backgrounds, Res brings us all together and is a place where everyone can be themselves to achieve a common goal.’

It’s not too late to get involved
Check out the Harmony Week website for information about events happening in your area tomorrow. You can also read some inspiring personal and community stories (or share your own!), and see how organisations large and small are marking this important occasion.
We also encourage you to explore Deakin’s Diversity and Inclusion programs and see how we live these important values.
Happy Harmony Day!
