Soak up the campus vibes with nursing and midwifery students Talia, Caitlin and Grace

As we strolled around the Burwood Campus this week, we had a chat to three students who are very happy to be back enjoying Deakin’s beautiful spaces in person.

Talia Minski and Grace Kingston are third-year nursing students, and Caitlin Baker is in her third year of a double degree in nursing and midwifery.

While they were on campus occasionally last year for practicals, this week is the first time they’ve been able to properly savour the campus experience in a long time.

This has included free pizza – bonus! – and hanging out in the library between classes. The library is a particularly important space for Talia, who isn’t able to study at home, so the combination of bookable and other learning spaces is a winner.

While they’re full of praise for the job their teachers did last year, all three are stoked to be back learning face-to-face, especially as nursing is a challenging course to study online. They’re also loving catching up with friends from their first year who they’ve not been able to see in over 18 months.

Grace is also focused on resuming her placement activities, which were put on hold last year because of the five kilometre travel restrictions. ‘I have a lot to catch up on,’ she says.

But it’s not just studying that is the attraction – these active students love the social aspects of campus life too. Caitlin is a member of the Deakin University Snow Club, which usually organises trips to Mt Hotham and Mt Bulla each year.

They all agree that they ‘spend too much money on coffee’ but overall just love the ‘amazing environment’ and the opportunity to spend time outside.
