Liz Watson and Jo Weston playing as part of the 2019 Australian Diamonds squad

2 March 2021

Cheer on our Diamonds as they face the NZ Silver Ferns in the Constellation Cup this week!

Deakin elite athlete students and Melbourne Vixens stars Kate Moloney, Liz Watson and Jo Weston will be doing us proud as they represent the official Australian Diamonds netball squad in the 2021 Constellation Cup this week, which runs from 2–7 March in New Zealand.

While fans will not be allowed to attend due to a snap lockdown announced by the New Zealand government yesterday, thankfully the games have been confirmed to proceed in Christchurch for the remainder of the test series.

Despite delays in training following their post-arrival quarantine in Christchurch and the latest disruptions, Watson (who is studying a Bachelor of Education – Primary) was all positivity as the Diamonds prepare to face their number one rival, the New Zealand Silver Ferns.

‘In terms of the way we quarantine and what we’ve been doing, most of us have experienced some sort of hub scenario or quarantine situation back home last year so we have experienced what it’s like to be able to train,’ Watson told 7News last week.

‘I don’t think we will be at a disadvantage. Ideally we would love to be out there preparing as we usually would but we’re just so lucky and happy that we’re over here playing netball so we’re making the best of the situation.’

See the video below to hear from Liz Watson and Jo Weston (a Master of Communication student) about how Deakin’s Elite Athlete Program has helped them manage international sporting careers with their university studies.

While Watson and Weston are seasoned Diamonds, Vixens’ captain Moloney is excited to join the international squad this year following her debut with the Diamonds in the 2020 Constellation Cup.

Moloney, a Master of Business (Sport Management) student, had a stellar competitive year nationally in 2020 and as winner of the female Sportsperson of the Year Award at Deakin’s 2020 Sport Awards, we will be cheering her on as she puts her talent towards securing her standing on the international stage.

Good luck this week, ladies!
