Apply for the 2020 Victorian International Education Awards now
Our international students are an invaluable and welcome part of the Deakin community. In this very challenging year, we encourage all international students to showcase their contribution to our University by applying for the 2020 Victorian International Education Awards (VIEAs).
Presented by the Victorian Government through Study Melbourne, these awards recognise Victoria’s most outstanding international post-secondary students in the areas of community contribution, academic performance and leadership.
What are the student categories?
You can apply for any of the following awards:
- International Student of the Year – English Language Training
- International Student of the Year – Higher Education
- International Student of the Year – Research
- International Student of the Year – Regional
- International Student of the Year – Vocational Education and Training (VET)
- International Alumnus of the Year.
Domestic students can also apply for the Victorian Student of the Year – Internationalisation award, which recognises students who have supported their international peers to engage with the broader Victorian community.
Find out the assessment criteria for each award, as well as read the full terms and conditions.
What are the prizes?
Award-winners in each of the above categories (except for the International Alumnus of the Year) will receive $6,000. Up to two runners-up per category will receive $2,000 each. All award-winners also automatically become part of the Study Melbourne Ambassador program in 2021.
All finalists and winners will receive a certificate of recognition.
The Premier’s Award – International Student of the Year recognises the most outstanding candidate for this year. The winner of this award will receive an additional $10,000 for their studies.
Nominees for other awards will automatically be considered as candidates for the Premier’s Award, so you don’t need to apply for this category.
Why should I apply?
There’s a number of reasons why applying for these kinds of awards is worthwhile – the application process will help you to outline your academic and extra-curricular achievements, you could expand your professional and social networks, while being a finalist or winner will look amazing on your CV!
But who can explain why you should enter better than one of Deakin’s past winners? Luocheng (Rod) Zhang, who is from China and is studying a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at the Geelong Waterfront Campus, won the International Student of the Year – Regional award at the 2019 VIEAs:
‘The VIEA can help you stand out, as it is a tremendous recognition of your academic achievements, leadership skills and contribution to local as well as global communities. Whether you win an award or not, the application itself is a valuable experience and a deep self-reflection of your study journey in Victoria as an international student.’
