Develop your vision for creating a sustainable future in our T3 unit
Did you know that Deakin has announced the University’s future strategic plan will include sustainability?
We need practitioners who can solve some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
In light of this demand, we encourage you to consider enrolling in HSH202 Creating Sustainable Futures in Trimester 3, 2020. The unit will be offered in intensive mode during Weeks 4 and 5, therefore all seminar contact will be finished before the Christmas break.
What is the Creating Sustainable Futures unit about?
In this unit, we will explore a range of topics that help us to address a range of critical issues linked to human health and wellbeing, including:
- social justice and equity
- ecosystems health
- climate change
- sustainable food systems
- gender equity
- fresh water, and more.
By the end of the two-week intensive period, students will have created an action plan/vision for a Sustainable Future in 2060.
What does the unit involve?
In Weeks 1 to 3, you will undertake self-directed learning, with support from Cloud resources and narrated presentations.
Following this, in Weeks 4 and 5, you’ll complete 16 hours of face-to-face seminars with students from other faculties. This truly interdisciplinary unit will give you a novel opportunity to meet and study alongside new students from around the University and consider their varying perspectives on sustainability.
We’ll host a dynamic group of guest speakers throughout the unit. In Trimester 2, we hosted:
- a Greens counsellor discuss social justice and sustainability
- Daizy Maan, from SPARK Deakin (for those of you with a social entrepreneurial flair!)
- Matt Franks, who is involved in Wilderness Therapy at Eastern Access Community Health
- Ashley Whitt from The Blue Carbon Lab.
You’ll also be assisted by a mentor/coach to guide you through your vision towards 2060, a unique offering available through the HSH202 unit.
And importantly, this unit will help you build on your existing skills to develop communications that are engaging, relevant and persuasive for creating change in society.
How will this unit help my employment prospects?
This unit will prepare you for future employment by developing your capacity to respond to critical issues – climate change, for example, has been announced as an ongoing global emergency. With these challenges in mind, employers will be looking for graduates who are equipped with the knowledge to respond to these challenges.
