Sport has always been at the heart of Deakin, and is one of our greatest strengths.
Current student and Deakin Melbourne Boomers basketball star Eziyoda ‘Ezi’ Magbegor was named the Betty Watson Australian Youth Player of the Year early this week at the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) Awards.
Ezi was the clear favourite to claim the award – formerly known as the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award – scoring 38 votes from a possible tally of 42 votes, ten clear of Bendigo Spirit’s rising star Shyla Heal (28 votes) and UC Capitals championship player Maddy Rocci (11 votes). Coaches and captains vote for this award (but cannot vote for their own players), illustrating the strong impression Ezi has made among her sporting peers and leaders.
A formidable member of the national women’s team, the Australian Opals, Ezi was crowned WNBL Rookie of the Year back in 2017–18 when she played for the Capitals, and this achievement now adds yet another accolade to her impressive and growing résumé. Ezi is part of Deakin’s Elite Athlete Program and we can’t wait to see what she achieves in 2020.
