It’s a wrap on the 2019 UniSport Australia Nationals Div 1 event – held from 29 September to 4 October on the Gold Coast – and our Deakin Dragons have ample reason to celebrate!

This year, the Dragons achieved the most successful results for Deakin University in many years at the annual tournament, with the Men’s Open Lawn Bowls and Women’s Softball teams claiming victories in their respective Gold Medal matches.

The win by the Open Lawn Bowls team against the reigning champions from the University of Southern Queensland was the result of dedication and determination over the past five years, and a steady collective resolve in the throes of a very tightly contested final.

The Women’s Softball team defeated their formidable Macquarie University opponents (the National Champions for the past two years) in the final with a tenacity and grace that earned commendation from officials and competitors alike.

The Women’s AFL and Mixed Ultimate Frisbee teams each made their respective Gold Medal matches, ultimately bringing home Silver Medals for their outstanding performances.

We extend a special mention to our Cheer & Dance team for an impressive three Gold wins – congratulations to the Deakin Devils Geelong for winning the Level 1/2 Co-Ed Cheer Category along with Deakin Gravity and Deakin Hydra from Burwood for wins in their respective Dance categories!

While the Women’s Basketball team had high hopes for retaining their 2018 championship title, the competition was especially fierce this year, and we are very proud of our Dragons who continued to display their fine form and outstanding sportsmanship while playing under intense pressure.

We also wish to warmly thank our coaches, sports trainers, massage therapists and all staff involved for their dedication and effort over such a big week, and we already can’t wait to do it all over again in 2020!
