Sport has always been at the heart of Deakin, and is one of our greatest strengths.
Deakin student and Melbourne Vixens star Liz Watson will be the vice-captain of the Australian Diamonds for the 2019 Netball World Cup, which runs from 12–21 July in Liverpool, England.
Watson was elevated to this prestigious role within the squad of twelve following a sustained period of excellence in performances for both club and country.
Liz is thrilled to have the opportunity, having wanted to play in a World Cup since she began playing netball professionally.
‘My dream is continue to play netball with the Melbourne Vixens and the Australian Diamonds, and I can’t wait to play in the World Cup,’ she said recently.
Liz is currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the Burwood Campus and is a member of Deakin’s Elite Athlete program. She will be putting her studies on hold temporarily while she takes on the best netballers in the world alongside Vixens teammates Caitlin Thwaites and Jo Weston.
We wish Liz and the Australian Diamonds all the best for the Netball World Cup, and will be keeping a keen eye on the results. Their first match is against Northern Ireland on Friday 12 July at 7.30pm AEST. You can watch it live on 9Gem.
