The year so far: your Student Council’s 2019 achievements

Kudos to the 2019 Student Council! They have hit the ground running and implemented considerable improvements for all of us at Deakin during only the first half of their tenure.

Let’s have a look at the key projects they have delivered for students so far this year.

24/7 study support

We’ve all done the late-night cram during the end of a trimester and it isn’t easy. Thankfully, your Student Council has contributed to the introduction of student support that is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Through the online platform Smarthinking, you can now work in real-time with tutors who specialise in a range of disciplines, or get help with general writing and study skills. You can even receive assignment feedback within 24 hours during trimester breaks, to ease the pressure of exam and final assessment preparations.

New Safe Spaces

The safety of all students is the utmost priority of your Student Council. To this end, we have worked hard to increase the number of Safe Spaces at Deakin. Most recently, there has been the addition of a Queer and Womyn’s room at the Waurn Ponds campus, located in Building JB near DUSA’s student lounge.

More library facilities

Libraries form the beating heart of university campuses and Deakin is no exception. Your Student Council has worked collaboratively to introduce essential services to the library in the first half of 2019. With the recent addition of microwaves, vending machines and water fountains, the Student Council has helped make the library all the more liveable, and the intense study sessions now all the more bearable.

Removal of 80% exam weights

Weighted exams are already intimidating – but at 80% of the final grade they can become downright daunting. Nobody needs that amount of stress. That’s why the Student Council has successfully advocated for the removal of all exams weighted at 80% of the final grade – a much-needed change for many Law Students who already have it hard as it is.

Breakfast at Burwood

Breakfast has long been touted the most important meal of the day, but it is also one of the most skipped meals. That’s why your Student Council, in collaboration with our Student Advocacy & Support Service (SASS) team, have introduced free breakfasts every Wednesday at the Burwood Campus stage. Your Student Council wants you to get the most out of your day, and that starts with brekkie!

We are working hard to bring you more great services this year…

The 2019 President, Jean-Marc Kurban, said he was thrilled with the progress the Student Council has achieved so far and is more determined than ever to continue the momentum.

‘When we put together our team, I made sure it was a cross section of our university. The Student Council is made up of peer and community leaders from all aspects of student life – most of which have been involved since our first days at Deakin. We’ve made connecting with students, and resolving your issues our business. If you’re a student, and you want to see something done, we’re your platform to do so!’

Thank you to our dedicated Student Council members who work with such admirable vigour and enthusiasm – we look forward to seeing many more improvements made across our campuses in the lead-up to 2020.
