Deakin announced as one of Australia’s top organisations for LGBTIQ+ inclusion

Deakin has been awarded the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI) Gold Medal. This award is for work undertaken in 2018 to increase the inclusion and support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer/Questioning staff (LGBTIQ+).

While we’ve previously achieved Bronze Awards in this national benchmark on LGBTIQ+ workplace inclusion, this year we’ve skipped Silver and moved straight to Gold.

Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander says this is the result of significant work by the whole Deakin community.

‘Deakin has previously received three consecutive Bronze Awards, so receiving the Gold this year is an incredible achievement we can all be proud of.

‘Deakin supports diversity and rejects homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. We recognise the rights of our LGBTIQ+ students and staff to learn, live and work free of prejudice and discrimination, with all the essential freedoms enjoyed by other members of our University community and the broader population,’ Professor den Hollander says.

We made it to Gold by:

Of course, there is always more to do. Our aim in 2019–20 is to translate our policies into practice so our LGBTIQ+ staff and students can experience inclusion in every aspect of University life.

Says Professor den Hollander: ‘We receive regular feedback from LGBTIQ+ students and staff who choose Deakin because they feel that they can be themselves here, which is something we can all be proud of.

‘This award is not the end of the journey; our job now is to build upon this success.’
