Deakin stars join the Geelong Cats AFLW team
Sport has always been at the heart of Deakin, and is one of our greatest strengths.
At Deakin, we’re committed to giving women the tools they need to reach their goals, on and off the pitch.
Whether it’s your dream to be a coach, mentor, trainer, teacher, athlete, manager, sports researcher or health promoter, it’s our mission to get you there.
Dr Natalie Saunders, lecturer in the Faculty of Health, explains that in essence it’s about championing the right of women to participate and benefit from sport, and do so by example of role models. ‘[Deakin] provides various platforms and opportunities to share stories and celebrate success.’
This is what the Deakin Women in Sport initiative is all about. The university is a proud sponsor of women’s netball in Australia, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, the VFL Women’s Geelong Cats, the Cadel Evans Women’s ride, is a presenting partner of JSF GRoWS and is the home of the WISE Hub (Women in Sport and Exercise).
In exciting news, the Geelong Cats will play in the 2019 season of the AFLW and the team features a number of Deakin staff, students and alumni!
