Can you tell us about your experiences in your course?
Willow: Personally, studying at Deakin has allowed me to pursue my passion in a supportive environment and meet like-minded people who have become great friends. I have been able to experience a range of roles, such as performer, set designer, lighting operator, scriptwriter and director, while working in groups in seminars. Being a drama student has provided me with opportunities such as being a dancer in a music video. I also undertook an internship as an assistant designer which went towards my course while also allowing me to learn first-hand how professional creatives work together to create a public performance..
How do you see your course preparing you for your career?
Willow: Both my seminars and internship experiences have helped me to be able to adapt to roles on and off stage. I have learned transferable skills such as leadership, teamwork and management from my group work experiences. I have been challenged to be courageous and take risks to push the boundaries of what I thought I could create as an artist. The connections I have made with my peers and lecturers have led to opportunities such as being a part of Deakin’s first-ever student-led comedy ensemble.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying at Deakin?
Willow: Deakin’s drama lecturers are currently practicing, meaning they have connections in the industry, which I highly recommend taking advantage of. Also, the lecturers are more than happy to give advice to young emerging artists, so don’t be afraid to ask all those burning questions.
