Today we speak with Zachary. Zachary graduated from Deakin with a Diploma of Spanish. After completing the Diploma Zachary moved to the live in the south of Spain to further develop his Spanish skills and is working as an English language assistant. Zachary’s philosophy on life is ‘to follow my heart and do things that I enjoy’. The teaching I’m currently doing is so rewarding.
I studied two units of Spanish online. I enjoyed the fact that it was a very flexible way to learn the language as I was given much of the content to study on my own time. Therefore, I was able to manage a good work and study balance whilst also enjoying life in general.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your course at Deakin?

Zachary: The most beneficial aspect of the Diploma of Spanish is the fact that now I can comfortably converse in Spanish with native speakers. I have a strong understanding of the language with reading and writing capabilities and my conversations with native speakers are fluent. I particularly enjoyed that I could practice Spanish in a friendly environment regularly with amazing teachers that had a passion for teaching the language. This passion aided me in developing the language for myself.

Tell us about your experience of Deakin’s teaching staff.

Zachary: I can only speak very highly of Deakin’s Spanish teaching staff. They enabled me to achieve my goal in learning Spanish and also ensured that the classes were fun and rewarding at the same time. Occasionally learning a language can be tedious and difficult and therefore it can be easy to lose motivation. However, the teaching staff that I had the pleasure to interact with ensured that the classes were not only fun but super informative. I learnt many knew things about the world and myself due to the teachers.

Since completing my Diploma I have moved to Spain to further develop my Spanish skills. I’m currently living in the south of Spain working as an English language assistant.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Zachary: The highlight of my career so far is the fact that I’m living in a foreign country and don’t feel out of place or on the outer boundaries of the community. I can easily converse with my colleagues in Spanish and enjoy all that Spain and Europe has to offer me. Granted this year with the Coronavirus has been difficult however, I have enjoyed the challenge and it has only been possible due to the fact that I had learnt Spanish.
