Why did you choose to study at Deakin?
Alex: I originally chose to attend Deakin University because of the great recommendations I was given through friends and family, also the incredible range of courses offered at the university. During the time I’ve spent studying at Deakin University, I had a fantastic experience, there were heaps of extracurricular activities to get involved in, the teachers and lecturers were passionate about their subjects and study/work/life balance was great.
How is your course preparing you to be work ready?
Alex: The courses at Deakin have been very well structured and teach the skills and knowledge applicable to the industry I am studying, which is not only useful in preparing me for the workforce but also makes the course more engaging.
Tell us about your experience of Deakin’s teaching staff.
Alex: All of my lecturers and tutors have been extremely knowledgeable about the course content and many have industry experience which I have been able to tap into.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of your course?
Alex: Meeting new people, both my classmates and teachers, and expanding my network whilst sharpening my skills and knowledge. .
How would you describe the learning environment and culture at Deakin?
Alex: The learning environment has been very positive from my experience. I am a hungry learner and I have been blessed with classmates and teaching staff who have helped me satisfy my craving for knowledge. I have been pushed through the many assessments I have done and this has made me a better artist and social media specialist.
Where do you see your career in five years?
Alex: I see myself working as a social media specialist, applying my graphic design, photography and visual art skills in order to be a stronger social media specialist.
Have you faced any challenges whilst studying at Deakin?
Alex: Studying whilst working full-time has been difficult; however, flexibility with online studying has made it possible for me to do both. Having trimesters has also made subjects much more manageable than if I were doing semesters.
What would you say to someone considering study at Deakin University?
Alex: Go for it. The facilities are fantastic and the teaching staff are not only knowledgeable, but also very friendly.
Alex Syrian studied Deakin University’s Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Arabic, and with minors in Visual Arts and Digital Media.
