I would advise you to leverage your lecturers or tutors as much as possible. Their industry knowledge and connections will help build your own networks and open your mind to new and different opportunities.

What was the most beneficial aspect of your course/research at Deakin?

Rebecca: The ability to complete this degree by a combination of coursework and research allowed me to develop a wide variety of skills that have benefited me in the work place. The coursework component of my degree gave me deep insights into the theoretical side of Communications and Marketing whilst constantly studying these theories alongside real world case studies. The second half of my degree, I undertook a Research Unit which involved a 20,000 word research project. My research project allowed me to utilize the skills I had learnt in the classroom and apply them to an investigation of a topic of my interest that is currently impacting the communication landscape. Throughout my research project, I had fantastic support from Deakin staff who helped me navigate my way through the technical and analytical side to research as well as to continuously understand the intended impact of my analysis. I enjoyed the flexibility of this Master’s degree as I was able to continue working part-time and fit my classes and study around my schedule.

Tell us about your experience of Deakin’s teaching/academic staff.

Rebecca: The staff at Deakin were incredibly supportive and informative throughout my degree. I always felt they had time to answer questions and engage with students’ difficulties. Many of my lecturers had industry experience and connections that they brought with them into our classes and as students, we were able to understand how the theoretical side of learning was applied in the workplace.

What has your professional journey been since completing your course/research?

Rebecca: Since graduating from my Master of Communication, I have worked internationally in New York City at a boutique Public Relations agency where I advised clients on their social media communication strategies. I then transitioned into a Digital Marketing role in the ever-growing advertising-technology industry, working with clients to grow and retain their digital client base. I now work in a Marketing and Communications role where I can bring together my interest in the digital advertising landscape with my passion for creative communication.

Describe your current professional role and future career goals.

Rebecca: Currently I work in the tertiary sector at Deakin University in a Marketing and Communications Coordinator Role within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment. Within my role, I manage our digital advertising strategy including paid advertising and social media strategy, alongside with creating the content that best reflects our faculty including photography, videos, articles and more. In the future, I would like to lead a marketing and communications team and continue to develop my leadership skills.
