I undertook two internships as part of my degree. One was at the Geelong Advertiser for two weeks full-time and the other was at Forte Magazine, one day a week for a couple of months. Both of these internships prepared me for life in a newsroom, how fast paced and reactive the industry can be, as well as giving me really beneficial contacts for when I finished studying. I was able to go out into the field with photographers and other journalists and gain some interviewing tips and tricks as well as get feedback on my work from industry professionals.
Since leaving Deakin, I have freelanced for several online magazines, started my own online lifestyle magazine and gained full-time employment within the communications industry. I was able to gain this employment within 3 months of graduating and I attribute that to the skills I learnt and harnessed whilst studying at Deakin.
