Whilst studying a Bachelor of Arts Maddie Brake was so inspired by her teachers that she decided she wanted to become one. ‘The teaching style at Deakin really encouraged me to consider a path in education. I hope to encourage students to think creativity and challenge their imaginations about what is possible in their own reading and writing experiences. The academics here really want to support the students throughout their university experience. Their teaching styles while varied all have a similar ethos; we love what we do, and we want to pass that love and passion on to you.’
As a writing student, my tutors are published authors who can offer support and feedback on our work; and that is an invaluable resource to have when you’re still exploring what you want to write about.
‘Deakin highlights the importance of supporting their students throughout the duration of their course and onwards. As a student, you aren’t pushed to compete with your peers, instead we are asked to offer guidance and support each other in our studies. The relaxed, flexible environment that the online-learning platforms and on-campus discussions provide really foster your love for learning,’ Maddie says.
In her free time, Maddie embraces opportunities to develop her skills professionally, ‘as a Deakin student, I have taken part in various students-helping-students opportunities in order to further my own understanding of the university as well as helping others. In terms of fostering creativity, Deakin has a student run and published literary journal called ‘Verandah’ which I have been lucky enough to submit to and be published. In doing this, I have been able to expose myself to industry settings and understand the processes of publication that will help me well into the future.’
