For Jesse Williams studying is all about being prepared to take on the real world, choosing to study a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication) he values hands-on experience. ‘The units that I’m doing have a very real-world applicable focus to them. No matter what I’m doing at Deakin I never once think “why am I learning this, why is this important” I’ve so far seen great value and relevance in everything I’ve done. The industry is changing and more and more people are learning about good design and the need for design has grown, along with the need to market yourself. Deakin’s units teach you both how to design well, and importantly, how to apply that design and be confident in what you have to show. All of the teachers that I’ve had at Deakin for my design courses so far have been personable, helpful, and extremely motivating. They’re always there to help and push you to do better.’
‘There are more opportunities available to me then I could realistically make use of in my time here. What I’ve chosen to make use of is exploring a wide range of electives within my course. Choosing electives in the arts and even commerce fields has allowed me to feel much more well-rounded in my studies. The opportunities that are available with integrating internships within your course are great at Deakin too. I completed an internship with the HR department at Deakin working on their internal marketing and graphical elements. It provided me with some invaluable experience for what it’ll be like to work in my field into the future, I loved it. Additionally, the ability to become a Student Ambassador has been great, and working with Deakin is always rewarding, I’m yet to meet a staff member that I have a bad experience with,’ Jessie says.
Deakin is a place that makes you feel like more than just a number. They are there to support you in any way that you want to take your degree and any way that you want to shape your future.
Jessie’s highlight of studying at Deakin is the culture and environment on campus. ‘Deakin is a place that makes you feel like more than just a number. They are there to support you in any way that you want to take your degree and any way that you want to shape your future. The atmosphere at Deakin is what keeps me coming back to study and meet up with class friends on my days off. The teachers have a genuine interest in you and care about what you’re doing and how you can improve. The support is there, the opportunities are there, the resources are there, all you need to do is match that with your own levels of enthusiasm and determination to succeed and you’ll be able to get what you want from your career with Deakin. From my experience, the learning culture at Deakin is a more personable one than a lot of other universities. The sense of belonging and importance that I get when I’m at Deakin are valuable qualities that a university can’t just sit back and hope to create. I’ve noticed at Deakin that they do all that they can to make you feel included and listened to.’
‘Deakin is a great place to be, I enjoy going in every day, even if it is just to study. Almost ridiculous to say after being in school almost my entire life, I almost wish I could go back and do it all over again,’ Jessie says.
