When Ellie Beltramin first arrived at Deakin University, she was unsure of what career was in her future. Ellie chose to study a combined Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts degree to explore a broad range of career opportunities. ‘When I left school I was unsure what field I wished to pursue. So, I relished the opportunity to undertake a course that allowed me to exercise my interest in two very different areas of study, and as a result, see just how complementary they are,’ she says.
Currently, Ellie attends the Deakin Burwood campus where she can often be seen in the creative arts spaces and television broadcast studio. ‘As an arts student I have access to the media resource centre, private editing suites, printing labs, and have been able to utilise the TV studio for numerous assignments.’
The Burwood campus definitely feels youthful and is incredibly engaging. I quite enjoy the campus lifestyle too. It’s a sense of community and belonging that other disparately spread universities must struggle to capture.
Ellie is a founder of Deakin’s annual short film festival, Filmy, she is also a Student Ambassador and has competed in a team on the 2 Day Ad Challenge. ‘I was fortunate enough to participate in a Deakin real-skills initiative called the ‘2 Day Ad Challenge’. The two-day program brought together a collection of arts students with diverse skills to work together and execute a piece of advertising content for Melbourne based social enterprise, Positive Pants. As part of the program, we liaised with an advertising agency, gaining real-world experience which was terrific and helped us to be our best.’
For Ellie, learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom, while enrolled at Deakin she has taken part in a multitude of valuable learning experiences and opportunities. ‘I’ve had nothing but positive experiences at Deakin. The uni has helped me grow as a person, expand my skill set, met like-minded people and encouraged my learning and academic curiosity,’ she says.
