Security and Surveillance

Surveillance is considered by many to be a growing problem in the contemporary quest to enhance human security. A common example that reinforces this point is the use of CCTV to prevent crime. While it is commonly understood that CCTV might have a deterrence effect, and can enhance feelings of security in public space, there are also concerns about how the data might be used, by whom, and for what purposes. Similar issues surround most technologies in contemporary crime prevention. Our intention with this blog is to raise discussion about the various benefits and problems in the link between surveillance and security. We do not pretend to have the full answers to these questions, but wish to encourage rich discussion that helps to better understand this relationship.
