Project Guardian: Using Social Media to Tackle Unwanted Sexual Behaviour
A new British police initiative has resulted in 15 arrests in just one week for sexual offences on London’s public transport system. The Project Guardian operation was developed in response to a Transport for London survey which revealed that while 15% of women had been victims of unwanted sexual behaviour on trains and buses, 90% had not reported it. 120 police officers patrolled public transport in a week of action from 23-28 September 2013. Twitter was used as a means of raising awareness about the project via the hashtag #ProjGuardian and passengers were encouraged to report any unwanted behaviour via a text number.
