New Book Launched by Kate Fitz-Gibbon
Dr Kate Fitz-Gibbon’s new book “A Second Chance for Justice: The Prosecutions of Gabe Watson for the death of Tina Thomas” (co-authored with Dr Asher Flynn, Monash University) was officially launched on Tuesday 26th February 2013 at the County Court of Victoria by Victoria barrister, Mr David Galbally QC, and the primary Queensland police investigator involved in the case, Detective Senior Constable Kevin Gheringer. Professor Sharon Pickering from Monash University was the Master of Ceremonies.
The book critically examines the quest for justice in the double prosecution of David ‘Gabe’ Watson, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter on the basis of criminal negligence for the death of his wife – Christina Thomas Watson – in Australia, and upon release from prison in Australia was tried and acquitted of her capital murder in Alabama.
Over 90 people attended the launch, including members of the Victorian legal community, members of Victoria Police, policy advisors from the Department of Justice, victims’ rights advocates, academics from a range of Victorian universities and legal practitioners from the Office of Public Prosecutions and the private sector.
