Dr Danielle Tyson interviewed by The Age about ‘Out of Character’ research report

DrD Tyson B&W Danielle Tyson (pictured) has been cited by Jenna Price from The Age in an article about her new research examining the impact of the 2005 Victorian reforms to the laws of homicide on legal responses to intimate partner homicides by men in Victoria 2005 – 2014. In the article, ‘Domestic violence will flourish because of government funding cuts’, Dr Danielle Tyson notes the failings of courts when it comes to dealing with family violence – and that’s a lack of understanding about the extent and range of what that violence constitutes.

As the report says: “The focus was on acts of physical violence, while controlling behaviour, threats to harm or threats to suicide, obsessive jealousy and other forms of violence were rarely perceived to be serious, despite these being recognised as key family violence risk indicators.” The research, just been published as a report, ‘Out of Character?: Legal Responses to Intimate Partner Homicides by Men in Victoria 2005 – 2014’, was conducted by Deakin’s Dr Danielle Tyson, Associate Professor Bronwyn Naylor (Law, Monash University) and Dr Debbie Kirkwood and Ms Mandy McKenzie (Domestic Violence Resource Centre Victoria). The research was funded by the Victorian Legal Services Board Program and is being launched at the Monash University Law Chambers this Thursday 5th May 4:30pm to 6:00pm.
