International students enrolled in undergraduate programmes in Australia find many academic and sociocultural challenges when studying in the new academic context. These challenges include the development of feedback literacy, which refers to understanding, acting on and interpreting feedback to actively engage and enhance learning. While prior research has suggested learning activities and requirements for developing feedback literacy, little attention has been paid to how international students make sense of new feedback conventions to become feedback literate.
This seminar will explore the processes used by a group of first-year international undergraduate students at an Australian university to develop feedback literacy. Semi-structured interviews, written responses and an e-log were used to capture students’ ongoing experiences. Drawing on a sociocultural approach, the presentation will examine the complexities students faced in adapting and negotiating their feedback repertoires of knowledge in the new environment. The analysis reveals that international students experience complex iterative reflective processes to develop new feedback practices with nuanced levels of feedback literacy development. The seminar will conclude with a discussion about students’ processes of developing feedback literacy.
