CRADLE Co-Director Deakin Distinguished Professor David Boud has again been recognised as the top Australian researcher in the field of Higher Education.

The achievements of Australia’s top researchers are celebrated in The Australian’s Research Magazine 2026. The magazine reports on the top researchers and institutions in 250 fields of research to honour our nation’s academics and their outstanding endeavours.

2026 marks the seventh year that David has been recognised as the top Australian researcher in Higher Education research.

Deakin University was recognised as the leading university in the Social Sciences fields of Academic and Psychological Testing and Higher Education. Deakin is also the leading institution for several areas in Engineering and Computer Science, Health and Medical Sciences, and Humanities, Literature and Art.

The Australian’s Research Magazine 2026 uses the number of citations for papers published in the top 20 journals in each field over the past five years to determine the top researcher and top research institution in each field of research. The citation metrics for David significantly contribute to Deakin’s position as a leader in the fields of Academic and Psychological Testing and Higher Education research. This is a significant indicator of CRADLE’s research impact and contribution in these areas.


David was also named a Highly Cited Researcher in the field of Social Sciences for the third time by Clarivate™.

The Highly Cited Researchers list by Clarivate™ is an annual recognition of influential scientists and social scientists worldwide who have made broad and significant contributions to their fields. A Highly Cited Researcher has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers™ which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past eleven years.

This means that David has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers™ which rank in the top 1% by citations for Social Sciences and publication year in the Web of Science™ over the past decade. In fact, David was one of ten Deakin researchers named on the Highly Cited Researchers list and David has made the list in 2022, 2024 and 2025.

His work is used both by researchers and scholars committed to the development of teaching and learning and he has changed the foundations of assessment practice through pioneering research and development.
