In this session, participants will be challenged to think differently about teaching and learning, shifting their focus from the individuals involved to the culture in which the activities unfold. Key features of medicine’s professional and learning cultures will be explored. The influence culture has on shaping learning will be considered, using examples from both inside and outside of medicine. These insights will inform critical reflection on how culture can sometimes constrain our educational aspirations, and prompt some problem solving about how to move productively forward.
Christopher J. Watling is Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurological Sciences, Oncology, and Family Medicine, Associate Dean for Postgraduate Medical Education, and a Scientist at Schulich’s Centre for Education Research and Innovation. He has a Masters in Medical Education from the University of Dundee and a PhD in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University. His research, widely published in the medical education literature, explores how and why feedback influences learning and how medicine’s professional culture shapes its educational practices.
