Some research into academic integrity, even highly-influential research, can reasonably be described as descriptive and predominantly atheoretical. Researchers have asked interesting and useful questions such as:
- How much academic misconduct is happening?
- Where is it happening?
- And, who is doing it?
Although such observations are critically important, observations are only the beginning of the scientific method, particularly in behavioural sciences such as psychology. Beginning with a how, where, or who observation, psychology research and methods quickly move to ask “why” questions about those observations. Why, for example, do students cheat; why do more students in certain courses cheat; and, why do more male than female students cheat? Why questions lead to ideas, hypotheses, and theories about how things work.
A great benefit of theories to research is that they provide us with the ability not just to explain what we observe, but also to predict what we will observe. In this presentation, I will talk about some of the existing and possible applications of theory to academic integrity issues, and the outcomes of some theory-driven research into academic integrity.
Dr Guy Curtis is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological Science at the University of Western Australia. His research interests include academic integrity and applied psychology, with a focus on individual differences in academic misconduct and organisational leadership. He is an author of over 50 journal articles and book chapters, co-editor of an upcoming book on Contract Cheating, and a multi-award-winning university teacher.
