CRADLE International Symposium 2017: Open Forum
26 September 2017
From 16-17 October 2017, CRADLE is hosting its second annual International Symposium. We are pleased to announce that this year’s public Open Forum event, ‘Re-imagining assessment in a digital world: where should the higher education sector begin?‘, will feature an expert panel of national and international assessment researchers: Professor David Boud (CRADLE), Professor Dragan Gasevic (University of Edinburgh), Professor Dirk Ifenthaler (University of Mannheim), and Dr Yoon Jeon ‘YJ’ Kim (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
Technology is transforming teaching and learning in higher education. There are many exciting possibilities for assessments that contribute dynamically to learning. However, the uptake of technology in assessment has been surprisingly limited. Assessments don’t take advantage of digital opportunities and digital innovators often draw from models of assessment that are no longer best practice. While we are beginning to see worthwhile changes, there is a sense that the sector requires a fundamental shift in thinking.
Re-imagining is always a difficult job. It requires academics, institutions and students to fundamentally revisit their assumptions, habits and practices. It requires a vision of what might be, rather than what is. However, educational technology is prone to hyperbole and ignores the ‘state of the actual’. This Open Forum will ask experts to look beyond hype and outline what needs to happen today to re-imagine assessment in a digital landscape.
The Open Forum is an opportunity for academics and teaching staff interested in educational assessment research to hear about the topic of re-imaging assessment in higher education from prominent national and international experts. This session is intended to be interactive, and it is anticipated that there will be a wide range of representation from different areas of academia posing questions to the Panel about particular areas of interest. The Open Forum will be facilitated by CRADLE’s Associate Professor Margaret Bearman, and symposium attendees will also be available to discuss areas of educational research.
