Relationship Building training
1 x 2 hour ‘live’ Zoom session
Upon completion of this training you will:
- be able to apply advanced communication skills to explore SME clients’ business needs (both financial and psychosocial), and confidently deliver difficult advice
- understand the components of self-awareness and communication barriers, and learn strategies to overcome these barriers
- develop relationship-building skills to help you establish a long-term, trusting business relationship with your SME clients.
While the type of engagement which some practitioners, such as insolvency experts, have with small business owners may not fall into a typical ‘client relationship’ as such, you will still benefit from the RBT module. This training will help you to develop skills to manage difficult conversations with small business owners and how to communicate the advice in a practical manner whilst being sensitive to the distress owners may be experiencing.
Mental Health First Aid training
5 hours of self e-Learning and 2 x 2.5 hour ‘live’ Zoom sessions
MHFA is an accredited and evidence-based course that will teach business advisors how to provide support to individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis or showing signs of a mental health problem.
Just like physical first aid, MHFA is applied until the crisis resolves or the person undertakes professional help. Business advisors will learn a variety of preventative strategies for:
- panic attacks
- anxiety problems
- suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- severe effects of drug or alcohol use and substance use problems
- non-suicidal self-injury
- severe psychotic states
- traumatic events

Two x 1 hour ‘live’ Zoom sessions
Business advisors will complete an online booster session 1 and 3 months after completing the initial training.
To assess the effectiveness of the training program, business advisors will also complete the following short evaluation activities.
|Business advisors (phase 1)|
3 x 10-minute surveys: 1) before training, 2) during the 1-month booster session, and 3) 10 months post-training.
The surveys will ask about your understanding and knowledge of mental health and your relationship with small business owner clients.
Voluntary feedback on the quality of the training is also requested after each session.
|Recruitment of business owners
Business advisors will assist in the recruitment of small-to-medium enterprise (SME) business owners to help evaluate the effectiveness of the training.
A small number of business advisors (approximately 20) will be invited to take part in an in-depth interview about their motivations for completing the training and the effectiveness of the program.
